Paint prep that makes the finish last
Updated: 2025-12-09 • Centurion, Gauteng, South Africa
Most paint problems are prep problems. If you want a neat finish that lasts, focus on a few fast steps before the first coat goes on.
1) Clean the surface
Dust and grease stop paint from bonding. For kitchens, a mild degreaser helps. Let the wall dry before painting.
2) Fix cracks and holes properly
Fill, let it set, then sand smooth. For larger patches, multiple thin layers beat one thick blob.
3) Spot-prime repairs
New filler absorbs paint differently and can “flash” through. A quick primer spot-coat evens out the finish.
4) Tape and protect edges
Mask trims and switches; cover floors. Neat prep saves more time than it costs.
5) Estimate paint so you don’t run short
Use the paint estimator to plan litres and coats. Add a little buffer for textured surfaces.
